My 4-Year-Old’s Hooker Chic

Would you let your daughter wear this to school?

I did. She’s dressing herself these days. She looks raunchier in person, with her skort flipping around and just a strip of thigh peeking over her socks. She insists on pulling them up over her knees, to hide the boo boos.

How anyone who is still young enough to say “boo boo” — and not as a cutesy affectation — can possibly look improper wearing kneesocks befuddles me, but as she bounced out of the house I was just a tad uncomfortable with the Pippi-Longstocking-meets-Pretty-Woman vibe.

I’m a prude about how my daughter dresses. This smacks a little of hypocrisy. My mother sewed these exact outfits, which we wore to Junior League picnics in the 1970’s.

But Anna doesn’t bare her midriff, has yet to own a two-piece bathing suit (nothing against them on principle, but have you seen the selection?), and I just plain have a thing against animal prints.

Other than that I try to stick to “as long as it fits and covers her bits” as a guide. It was, however, easy to ban flip flops and princess shoes out of the house because she consistently turned her ankle. Pain, she understands.

But as she asserts herself more and more, I see contention looming. Nothing new, but very new to us. I hope the ease with which I conceded on tops and bottoms matching, tutus at the grocery store and Elton John eyewear doesn’t predict my rapid capitulation.

And so it begins.

  1. I think she looks pretty cute 🙂 I especially love the mismatched buttons on the jean jacket – I don’t know any hookers who do that 😉 I don’t think you have to worry, until they start selling kiddie-sized thong unders, ack!

    • I’m sure some department store chain in Britain will soon be accused of carrying such unders…
